Supreme Court orders to detain Ex-VP Adeeb until end of trial

Supreme Court has ordered to detain former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor until end of the trial on Maabinhura embezzlement case.

The former vice president was brought under custody after a failed attempt to flee the country, while his passport was withheld by authorities in relation to the ongoing investigations. Upon his arrest, Adeeb was remanded for 15 days by the Criminal Court.

Prosecutor General's Office appealed at the Supreme Court to maintain the 8-year prison sentence on Adeeb and to keep him in custody until end of the trial.

The Supreme Court said the decision to keep Adeeb in custody comes in reference to past behaviour and the seriousness of the charges raised against him. The first appeal hearing on the case was held on Tuesday which was concluded by giving the defendant a period of 7-days to appoint a lawyer.
