Warrant to arrest EX-VP Adeeb was not issued as he was still in custody: Supreme Court

Supreme Court has revealed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was under the custody of authorities when Prosecutor General's Office sought a temporary warrant to detain Adeeb.

In remarks made to an online newspaper, Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham said the state requested the Supreme Court to issue an arrest warrant and an order to keep Adeeb in custody for period of his trial. However, she revealed the Supreme Court only ruled to hold his passport, while the requests for arrest warrant and the detention order were rejected. The authorities feared the former vice president might flee the country, temper with evidence or influence witnesses, she added.

In response to the claims, the Supreme Court revealed Adeeb was abroad for medical treatment and was under the custody of the authorities. On the same note, the Supreme Court said the Prosecutor General's Office asked for the orders against the legal procedures in practice.

The Supreme Court said a decision was not made on the request as Adeeb was out of the country, adding however, relevant authorities were informed his passport was withheld due to security reasons. Highlighting Adeeb's passport was withheld while he was serving a sentence, the Supreme Court said the Prosecutor General's Office did not inform the court when he completed serving the jail sentence.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court advised to refrain from making comments which will defame courts of law and its mandate.
