Criminal Court remands Ex-VP Adeeb for 15-days

Criminal Court has given a remand of 15 days for former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

The former vice president was brought back to Maldives following his failed attempt to flee the country and gain political asylum from India. Once brought to Maldives, Adeeb was taken to Criminal Court for remand in the early hours of Monday morning. The court ordered for the immediate release of the former vice president, citing he was arrested in international waters against domestic and international laws.

However, earlier on Monday morning he was arrested after Criminal Court issued a warrant, over the violation of a travel ban of Supreme Court and for fleeing the country after signing a confession and agreeing to testify in court. He was then taken to the detention centre in Dhoonidhoo.

The international legal team of former vice president Ahmed Adeeb revealed the case will be submitted to United Nations as he was unlawfully handed over to law enforcement officials of Maldives by the Government of India.

Turning down the asylum plea, India handed over Adeeb to Maldivian authorities earlier on Saturday. Adeeb was turned away from India after a failed attempt to enter the country on a tugboat. The former vice president was apprehended when he arrived in Thoothukudi, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He travelled on tugboat named Virgo 9.

The newspaper reported there were 9 crew members on-board the tugboat when it left for the Maldives on July 11. The crew included an Indian and eight Indonesians. The vessel registered in Singapore started its return journey on July 27 with 10 people on-board, including Adeeb.
