Police search apartment of EX-VP Adeeb

Maldives Police Service has conducted a search operation at the apartment of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor.

Late Saturday night, under a court order, police officers searched the 9th floor and the terrace of a house named Humashi in Male' City. The search went on for about 4 hours and was carried out in the presence of Adeeb's lawyers and his spouse Mariyam Nashwa.

The police service did not detail why the search was carried out or what was obtained as evidence. However, the search was carried out once Adeeb was arrested by local authorities once the tugboat he tried to flee entered Maldivian waters.

Turning down the asylum plea, India handed over Adeeb to Maldivian authorities earlier on Saturday. Adeeb was turned away from India after a failed attempt to enter the country on a tugboat. The former vice president was apprehended when he arrived in Thoothukudi, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He travelled on tugboat named Virgo 9. The newspaper reported there were 9 crew members on-board the tugboat when it left for the Maldives on July 11. The crew included an Indian and eight Indonesians. The vessel registered in Singapore started its return journey on July 27 with 10 people on-board, including Adeeb.

The Maldivian authorities announced Adeeb fled the country hours after the news broke in media.
