Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has claimed the state must be mindful and must not misplace the tax received from the citizens.
Speaking at the ceremony held to commemorate the 9th Anniversary of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), Parliament Speaker Nasheed said the state must keep records of the tax received from the citizens, adding the state should have a proper mechanism to manage tax. Nasheed noted some tax policies have become a burden to some businesses. In this regard, he spoke on the importance of establishing a conventional tribunal to receive complaints regarding tax policies.
Furthermore, the parliament speaker expressed tax mechanisms and policies must not be utilised as a political weapon. Nasheed said the system must not be violated to cause damage to businesses. He added personal information on individuals and companies stored at MIRA must also not be made public.
During the ceremony, MIRA presented awards to 17 parties for consistently paying the highest number of tax.
Further, Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer inaugurated the five-year strategic plan of the tax administrative body.
