Lives of many citizens are stuck in the justice system: Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla has expressed concerns that lives of many citizens are stuck in the justice system of the country.

Speaking over a report on Criminal Court submitted to the parliament by Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Eva stated it is concerning that minor cases are held back and stuck at courts of law without a conclusion. Noting if a case of a political figure is submitted to a court, the cases are proceeded in haste, Eva said some citizens spend years not knowing what happened to the case.

The opposition members at the parliament also commented in favour of the report. In this regard, Parliamentarian Ahmed Amir said every citizen is ensured of justice despite their job positions, appealing to end the discrimination within the justice system. Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Ahmed Shareef expressed there must be judges in courts who have received certain training, adding an audit of the courthouses are required to determine the reason behind the delay in justice.

The parliamentarians representing the ruling party noted the issues highlighted in the report must be looked into by the Parliamentary Committee for Judiciary to seek swift solutions. In this regard, Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy stated 140 inmates are in custody without any sentence, adding the compensation for their time in the prison is impossible to be paid if they are proven innocent after a court process.

Collectively, all members called to find solutions for the issues highlighted in the report.
