High Court of Maldives has ruled the arrest and detention of former Parliamentarian Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim was illegal.
In addition to Waheed, several opposition parliamentarians were arrested and detained for entering parliament premises. The parliamentarians were arrested for entering the parliament premises despite the declaration of Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) that those parliamentarians have lost their seats at the parliament.
Citing the Parliamentarian Privileges Act, the High Court ruled a lawmaker can only be arrested with a warrant obtained from the Prosecutor General. In its verdict, the court said the arrest warrant did not come from the Prosecutor General in the mentioned incident. Therefore, the high court said the arrest was unlawful.
Waheed was arrested and remanded for several times.
