Advising judges restores an important characteristic of the constitution: Speaker

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has described the decision of Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to advise 3 judges at the Supreme Court of Maldives, including the Chief Justice as restoring an important characteristic of the constitution.

JSC decided to counsel Chief Justice Dr. Abdulla Didi, Supreme Court judges Abdulla Areef and Adam Mohamed Abdulla, following an investigation by the commission. The complaint filed against the judges states Supreme Court took over documents from a lower court in relation to an ongoing debt case against former Deputy Managing Director of Public Service Media (PSM) Mohamed Ikram Abdul Latheef.

Commenting on the matter, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed stated every human is bestowed with three chances to prove their innocence as a basic right. Nasheed highlighted those are lower courts, High Court and Supreme Court, adding taking over a case in a lower court by the Supreme Court is against the constitution.

In addition, Nasheed said that judges must not be influenced or judges should not accept any bribery. Moreover, Nasheed expressed JSC is working to restore all the characteristics of the constitution.
