Police repeatedly requested to detain several parliamentarians: PG

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham has revealed Maldives Police Service repeatedly requested to detain several parliamentarians from the past parliament, although no such requests were authorised by the Prosecutor General's Office. The prosecutor general made the remarks when summoned to the Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary.

The committee members questioned the prosecutor general over the charges raised by her claiming the 12 reinstated parliamentarians of the past parliament illegally attempted to get in to the parliament secretariat. Answering the questions, Prosecutor General Bisham said Maldives Police Service repeatedly requested to detain the parliamentarians, adding however, no such requests were authorized or acted upon. Over the several attempts of police institution to seek detain notice for parliamentarians, the Prosecutor General's Office sought mistakes made by the police, noted Bisham. Reiterating every case forwarded to prosecutor general's office were not accepted, Bisham assured charges are only raised with sufficient evidence.

Moreover, Bisham answered claims that the stand of the state being changed during the procedure of criminal cases, saying the stand was not changed in the court proceedings. In addition, Bisham said the stand on some cases were changed to fit then guidelines issued by the Attorney General's Office. She noted if the stand was changed on any occasion, the decision would have been reasoned out at the proceedings.
