Investigation report on Maafushi prison to be publicised in the coming days: NIC

National Integrity Commission (NIC) has revealed the investigation report on the recent incident which took place at Maafushi Prison will be publicised in the coming days.

Speaking at the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions, President of NIC Ahmed Sulaiman said a team visited Maafushi Prison and launched an investigation into the clashes between the inmates and the prison officers on May 20. He said the investigation has now been concluded, adding actions will be taken against the perpetrators.

NIC has the legal authority to investigate illegal activities of Maldives Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Maldives Customs Service and Maldives Immigration. The relevant authorities are continuing investigations into the incident that injured half a dozen inmates and prison officers.

Previously, Maldives Correctional Service revealed the disruption in the largest prison in Maldives took place when a prison guard refused to provide an illegal item to an inmate. The guard was attacked by the inmate with an iron rod.

The service added the latest incident in the prison took place because the regulations and procedures were not followed by the guards, adding guards exerted excessive force compared to the situation.
