Discussions take place to promote Maldives as a tourism destination in China

Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed and Ambassador of Maldives to China Aishath Azeema have discussed ways to promote Maldives as a tourism destination in China. The discussions took place during a courtesy call on the tourism minister by the ambassador.

During the meeting, discussions were held on ways to diversify tourism. The minister and the ambassador also highlighted the ongoing efforts to strengthen safety and security of tourists visiting Maldives. The minister also explained the steps taken by the administration to ensure the safety of tourists in Maldives.

China is among the top 5 markets for the tourism industry of Maldives. In this regard, 116,282 tourists arrived in Maldives from China in the first 5 months of the year.

Furthermore, European Union Counter Terrorism Coordinator Gilles De Kerchove also paid a courtesy call on Minister Ali Waheed. During the meeting, discussions were focused on sustainable tourism promotion, industry safety and security enhancement and 5th Tourism Master Plan development.

Counter-terrorism coordinator Kerchove is on a two-day official visit to the Maldives and is meeting with key interlocutors within the government to discuss counter-terrorism challenges and future EU support to combat terrorism in the Maldives.
