President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has congratulated the newly-elected president, vice president and the Executive Committee of Maldives Bar Council. In a tweet, President Solih expressed hope Maldives Bar Council will work to enhance the legal sector of the country.
In the Maldives Bar Council Election 2019, organised and monitored by Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM), prominent lawyer Maumoon Hameed was elected as the President of Maldives Bar Council after he secured 543 votes. The other candidate who competed for the top position, Husnu Al Suood, who is the President of the Presidential Commission on the Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances managed to win 401 votes.
Meanwhile, Abdulla Muizzu, who served as the Attorney General during the presidency of President Mohamed Nasheed, was elected as the Vice President of Maldives Bar Council. He secured 792 votes, while former judge at Civil Court of Maldives Mohamed Haleem managed to secure 139 votes.
19 lawyers competed for the Executive Committee of Maldives Bar Council. The 6 individuals who were elected to Executive Committee are former Parliamentarian Anara Naeem, former Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu, former judge at Civil Court Aisha Shujune Muhammad, Secretary General of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Anas Abdul Sattar, Mohamed Faisal and Abdul Maaniu Hussain. Attorney General of Maldives is also a member of the Executive Committee, according to the Legal Profession Act.
ECM held voting for the positions of Maldives bar Council in Male' City and Addu City.
