Ambassador of Maldives to the UK Dr Farahanaz Faisal has signed the Global Pledge on Media Freedom at the side-line of the Global Conference for Media Freedom held in London, UK.
The Global Pledge on Media Freedom commits to speak out and take action together, through a Media Freedom Coalition that will make the case for the fundamental importance of media freedom for the security, prosperity and wellbeing of all societies. It also commits to encouraging and supporting governments to take action to strengthen media freedom, bringing together civil society, media organisations, lawyers, journalists and communication experts to help establish sustainable, cross-government structures to take plans forward.
Furthermore, the Global Pledge on Media Freedom commits to supporting the work of the United Nations, and other organisations, to tackle a range of challenges affecting journalists, to supporting the development of diverse, independent, public interest media, maintaining these principles and being vigilant.
The Global Conference for Media Freedom in 2019 was co-hosted by Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland and the UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, as part of an international campaign to shine a global spotlight on media freedom and increase the cost to those that are attempting to restrict it.
