Former Minister of Defence Adam Shareef Umar has revealed the military experienced the highest level of military influence during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
In an exclusive interview in PSM News, Parliamentarian Adam Shareef, who was the defence minister during the Yameen administration, said the military was highly influenced by politicians when he took the position in 2014. Adam Shareef said due to the influence highly unfavourable incidents took place, mentioning the blast on the presidential speed boat in 2015, in which Yameen narrowly survived. He hinted the attack was organised and executed by military officers in an attempt to remove Yameen from power, adding the military should be exerting all efforts to ensure the safety of the president.
Furthermore, explaining the high level of influence in the military, the former defence minister also shed light on the weapons hidden in an island leased to be developed as a resort and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) found in the capital, Male City. Adam Shareef said policies were formed in a way the military could be influenced, high ranking military officers had an extraordinary level of close connections to politicians. He widely spoke on making policies and guidelines in a way the military could function independently without external influences.
