Member countries urge to fast-track re-admission of Maldives to The Commonwealth

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the countries that called to fast-track the readmission of Maldives to The Commonwealth.

In a tweet, the foreign minister thanked India, Bangladesh, Canada, Pakistan, Rwanda and Sri Lanka for the strong show of support at Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting held in London. He added the ties between the countries run deep.

Previously, Minister Shahid has said Maldives aim to retake its rightful place as a member of The Commonwealth and look forward to Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2020 (CHOGM 2020), to be held in Kigali.

Maldives withdrew from the Commonwealth in 2016, under former President Abdulla Yameen. The current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made the request to re-join the Commonwealth in a letter to Secretary-General Patricia Scotland last December.
