Development of regional hospitals to create of 1,300 jobs

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated with the development of 5 hospitals across Maldives, the healthcare sector will see the creation of 1,300 job opportunities.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, President Solih said the expansion of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male' City would not bring a total solution to the healthcare sector. As part of the efforts to further enhance the healthcare sector, the president revealed hospitals in 10 regions in the country would be upgraded. He expressed the aim is to initiate and complete upgrading 5 hospitals before the end of the year.

The first five hospitals to be upgraded are Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Gan Regional Hospital, Thinadhoo Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital and Hithadhoo Regional Hospital in Addu City, according to Ministry of Health.

Although the ministry has not revealed the areas the hospitals will provide specialised treatment, it has been decided the hospitals in the north will provide specialised treatment for Thalassemia and the hospitals in the south will provide specialised treatment for heart-related diseases. The ministry has said the aim is to ensure citizens can attain medical treatment from the areas they live, instead of travelling to Male' City.
