President of Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) Ahmed Shareef has said Maldives does not need an electronic voting system, adding rather should attempt to gain public trust on the voting process.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 18th Electoral Affairs System held in Maldives, Shareef said ECM does not have a plan to introduce an electronic voting system in Maldives. He said the system is not adequate for a small country such as Maldives, with a voting population of just over 260,000.
However, the head of the electoral body said ECM should gain public on the voting process. Shareef said it is important to properly compile a voting list and ensure the procedures are correctly followed.
Electoral heads from 19 countries and 58 representatives from 24 organisations are taking part in the symposium.
