Tourism industry creates 17,000 new jobs so far this year

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the tourism industry has created 17,000 new jobs in the first 6 months of the year.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, President Solih said 12 new resorts were brought in to operation so far this year. However, the president noted Maldivian youth taking jobs created in the tourism industry is not enough. He said efforts are underway to train and recruit more Maldivians with the assistance from Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Education.

The president highlighted establishing a minimum wage would encourage more Maldivian youth taking up jobs from the industry. He added a bill to establish a minimum wage would be submitted to the parliament later this year. He has already created a board as part of the efforts to establish a minimum wage in Maldives.
