Customs begins establishing GTAS system in Maldives

Maldives Customs Service has begun efforts to establish a system to provide information in advance on the arrivals and departures from Maldives.

Customs service will establish the system under the Global Travel Assessment System (GTAS) programme of The World Customs Organisation (WCO), with assistance from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

A team of the WCO visited Maldives from June 17-25. During the trip, the team familiarised the customs officers on the GTAS programme. The training programme was attended by Maldives Police Service, Maldives Immigration and Maldives National Defence Force.

While the first phase of the system has been completed, some airlines now provide information of the passengers, according to customs. The system will be fully established by 2020 which will ease receiving information of the passengers beforehand.
