Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has stated extremist ideologies and promotional activities are mostly targeted at youth. The education minister made the remarks addressing the workshop on the Role of Religious Leaders in Preventing and Countering Extremism conducted by UAE's Hedayah Centre in collaboration with National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) of Maldives.
Speaking at the workshop, the education minister stressed on the importance of education and awareness, and how the approach has been proven with positive results. Noting not only uneducated or unemployed people are victims of extremist groups, the minister said educated and employed people even become victims of such groups. She further urged to make peace and tolerance a long and lasting trend.
Furthermore, minister expressed works will be exerted to instil education on terrorism and extremist within the school system to aware the children.
The inauguration of the workshop was attended by Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi and senior officials from government institutions.
