Government to propose to increase Supreme Court bench to 7

The government has decides to propose to increase the Supreme Court bench from 5 to 7. The amendment will be submitted to the parliament next week, according to Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath.

The Supreme Court was established in Maldives on September 18, 2008 with 5 judges with Abdulla Saeed as the Chief Justice. However, an amendment to the Judicature Act of Maldives on August 10, 2010 increased the number of judges in Supreme Court to 7 and appointed new judges with Ahmed Faiz Hussain as the Chief Justice.

A further change was brought to the bench in December 2014. The change removed Chief Justice Ahmed Faaiz Hussain and Judge Muathasim Adnan and reappointed Abdulla Saeed as the Chief Justice with the bench reduced to 5.

However, during the State of Emergency issued in February 2018, Abdulla Saeed was arrested and removed as the Chief Justice and Judge Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi was appointed to the position on June, 28 2018.
