Environment Minister says capital city is in danger of electricity failures

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has revealed the electricity network in the capital, Male' City, will fail if the completion of the fifth power project face further delays.

Addressing a ceremony held at Foakaidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, the environment minister noted providing electricity services is a challenge faced to the whole country. He noted the negligence in providing electricity services and enhancing the existing infrastructure have resulted in a deteriorated situation.

Noting the negligence of the past administrations have caused a burden, the minister expressed the issues at hand must be solved immediately. Furthermore, shedding light on the electricity situation in Male', he remarked if the electricity failures in the city are not solved, the fear of being unable to provide electricity required is inevitable.

Speaking on efforts to minimise the risk of such a situation, the minister stated efforts are exerted to complete and inaugurate the fifth power project. Highlighting the administration gives utmost priority for environment friendly practices, the minister spoke on the target to generate 70 percent of the energy from renewable energy sources during peak hours. His comments originated amidst concerns of the public over increase in electricity bills.

Billed amounts have risen due to the increase in electricity usage, according to State Electric Company Limited (STELCO). The company revealed in March, 15 million kilowatts were used in Male' city which is an increase of 2 million kilowatts compared to the same month of last year.

It is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to reduce electricity tariffs.
