Supreme Court of Maldives has ordered to hold the passport of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb who is currently in India for medical treatment.
Supreme Court ordered Maldives Immigration to hold the passport of former vice president once the state appealed to nullify the High Court verdict on graft allegations. Filing the appeal, the state stated the verdict on the graft allegations contradicts two initial verdicts made by the Supreme Court. The High Court had nullified the 8-year jail sentence on Adeeb over the corruption case of Maabinhuraa.
Previously, the Supreme Court also nullified the 10-year jail sentence on Adeeb over the possession of a firearm, while the High Court nullified the 15-year jail sentence on him over the presidential speedboat blast. The only verdict appealed by the state was the 8-year jail sentence over the corruption allegations.
Upon permission from the authorities, Adeeb is currently in India for medical treatment. He is due to arrive back in Maldives on June 26.
