Government terminates agreement to develop Odagallaa as a resort

The government has decided to terminate the agreement to develop Odagallaa in Gaafu Alifu Atoll as a resort.

Speaking in a press conference, Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed a press conference revealed the former administration granted permission to develop a resort in accordance with the relevant regulations. He added the decision was met with concerns on the environmental impacts a resort development project would potentially have on the island.

The tourism minister noted the decision to terminate the agreement was made after extensive discussions with further reference to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Citing the EIA, he said the fisheries sector would be widely affected both socially and economically if a resort is developed in Odagallaa, adding the island is also used by locals to go on picnics. He noted the impact of a resort development project would completely destroy the natural habitat of the island.

Furthermore, according to EIA, Odagallaa instils a habitat for various bird species, including the rare White Tern while the island is also preferred by turtles as a breeding ground during a certain period of the year.

The former government contracted Chairman of Hotel and Resorts Construction Mohamed Ali Janah to develop a resort in Odagallaa.

Commenting on the matter, Minister Ali Waheed said all works on the island have been terminated immediately, adding he has requested the president for advice on further steps.

Following the decision, Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council has thanked President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the tourism minister. The decision was widely supported by the public.
