Prison officers in Maafushi Prison have refused to deal with inmates following the chaos that took place last Thursday night.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has revealed the situation in the prison had become worse ever since some prison officers used excessive force against six inmates to control the situation. The incident occurred in unit number 4 of the remand prison.
Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz said cuts and scrapes were seen on some inmates after the clashes between inmates and the officers. Munaz highlighted the clashes were caused when the prison officer refused to bring in prohibited items to the cell when the inmate requested. He revealed the situation was worsened when the officers who attended the scene acted against the regulations.
Speaking to PSM News, an officer from Maafushi Prison said many officers are refusing to go near unit number 4 and refusing to bring inmates to Male'. PSM News has been informed the inmates have damaged and destroyed the CCTV cameras in different areas of the prison.
The officers are unsure of their security and protection, according to the officer who spoke with PSM News. The officer revealed although officers are attending their duties many have refused to go near the unit 4 refusing rumours of any strikes from officers.
