Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan has said the youth unemployment rate in Maldives has increased by 22 percent.
Speaking at a ceremony held by higher education ministry to inaugurate the skills show held to familiarise students and youth on the job market, higher education minister expressed introducing more jobs for youth is a priority of the administration. The minister said when looking at the employment industries, the picture is worrisome. In this regard, he stated while youth contributes to a vast majority of Maldives, the youth unemployment rate currently stands at 22%. He described the issue as an economic and social challenge.
Furthermore, the higher education minister said youth cannot be familiarised to new talents if the education system fails to provide a platform for students to explore their skills. He noted the administration gives utmost priority to create job opportunities and platforms for youth to explore their skills.
The skill show is participated by 40 parties, including government offices, private companies and non-governmental organisations, according to the higher education ministry. The skill show aims to provide information about several industrial and traditional talents.
