Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has ordered Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) to suspend the Commander of Emergency Support Group in Maafushi Prison.
The decision was made after the home minister visited the prison following the disruptions caused late Thursday. During his visit, the minister met with the inspector general at Maafushi Prison and the prison officers.
Speaking to the media on conclusion of his visit, Minister Imran revealed the chaos in the prison took place after an inmate assaulted a prison officer. He added several inmates sustained injuries due to excessive force exerted by the prison officers. He assured all necessary actions will be taken after a thorough investigation.
