Ministry of Home Affairs has revealed inmates sustained injuries due to excessive force exerted during the chaos that took place in Maafushi Prison late Thursday. The home ministry made the remarks in a statement issued revealing actions are being taken against those responsible who are responsible.
Both prison officers and inmates sustained injuries due to the incident and the case is currently under investigation, according to the statement. Furthermore, home ministry revealed Inspector of Maldives Correctional Service and staff from relevant sections visited Maafushi Prison to assess the situation immediately after receiving the news of chaos in prison.
The ministry added due to injuries from an attack from an inmate, a prisons officer is admitted at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). In addition, the ministry noted some inmates sustained injuries due to excessive force used by prison officers to control the situation.
The ministry assured the government will take all necessary actions to avoid any such incident in the future.
