Home Minister visits Maafushi Prison

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has visited Maafushi Prison to inquire about the current situation of the facility following disruptions caused late Thursday.

During the visit, the home minister met with senior officials of the prison to identify the cause for the chaos. He assured all inhumane acts will be put to an end but any reform in the prison system cannot be achieved immediately. He said no positive improvements were made in the situation of the prisons.

Over the past couple of days, there have been reports in the media that prison officers used brutal force against inmates. The reports say the inmates were pepper sprayed, with officers also shaving the heads of some inmates.

However, all such comments were dismissed by Maldives Correctional Service.
