President says he will do everything in his power to reform judicial sector

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured he would do everything in his constitutional power, granted to him as the head of the state, to uphold the values and principles outlined in the Constitution of Maldives. The president made the remarks in the wake of ongoing disagreement between Supreme Court of Maldives and Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The Supreme Court had overturned a suspension issued by JSC on Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Didi. However, JSC maintains the suspension is still in place as it is the lawful body approved by the Parliament of Maldives to oversee the courts of law and the judges.

In a statement issued commenting on the ongoing dispute, President Solih highlighted it is a lawful duty of the head of state to make sure all the laws are implemented and to ensure the government, independent institutions and the people abide Constitution of Maldives.

Furthermore, the president noted JSC has been mandated to oversee the courts of law, adding ways to monitor the institution have been mentioned in the constitution. In this regard, he said as the parliament had been mandated to monitor JSC, no institution or authority in Maldives can act in a way which contradicts the constitution.

Noting to ensure an independent justice system in Maldives is an electoral pledge, President Solih assured he would do everything in his power and authority to achieve the target.
