Developed countries are not bothered by global warming: Environment Minister

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has claimed developed countries are not bothered by global warming. The environment minister made the remarks at the ceremony held to mark World Oceans Day.

Addressing the ceremony, the minister criticised although the matter is spoken out on several high-end forums, developed countries do not take actions against the matter. Noting unlike developed countries, Maldives aim and work towards minimising the negative effects of climate change, the environment minister expressed there is still more to do to achieve the targets. In this regard, he said it is crucial to regulate policies to ensure the marine habitat are protected, adding the existing policies require polishing. Expressing the natural marine habitat of the oceans are becoming extinct, he shed light in the scientific researches.

Furthermore, the minister added while every human attributes to climate change directly or indirectly from all parts of the Maldives, the biggest threat is to low lying countries such as Maldives. He stated protecting the nation and the land is a responsibility of Maldivians, expressing foreigners will not come to save the country from effects of climate change.
