Adeeb departs to India for medical treatment

Upon permission from the authorities, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb have departed to India for medical treatment.

Ministry of Home Affairs revealed former Vice President Adeeb was given permission to leave the country for medical treatment after considering all options. In a statement issued regarding Adeeb's medical treatment, the home ministry said he was given permission after recommendations from several doctors. The statement noted doctors repeatedly advised to seek overseas medical treatment to eliminate any further deterioration of his health. The home ministry revealed all attempts to provide treatment to Adeeb in Maldives failed even after bringing medical experts to the country.

Adeeb is accompanied by his spouse Mariyam Nashwa, 3 officers from Maldives Police Service and 3 officers from Maldives Correctional Service. While Adeeb's passport is still held by the authorities, he travelled with a travel document.

With serious allegations levied against the former vice president, Home Minister Imran has assured Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations Adeeb will not be given the opportunity to flee during his time abroad to attain medical treatment.

Adeeb has been diagnosed with Glaucoma in 2016 and doctors have referred to seek medical treatment from abroad. He is due to arrive back in Maldives on June 26.
