Azim appointed as chair of the 11-member temporary parliamentary committee

Parliamentarian Ali Azim has been appointed as chair of the 11-member temporary parliamentary committee to appoint members to the 17 permanent committees of the Parliament of Maldives. Parliamentarian Mohamed Saeed was appointed as the vice-chair of the temporary parliamentary committee.

The parliament has formed 17 parliamentary committees. The 17 committees include 13 committees to oversee the mandates of the government and 3 committees on the role of the parliament. Instead of the usual 13 committees, the parliament passed to form 17 committees with the votes of 77 parliamentarians. The new committees formed include Judiciary Committee, Decentralisation Committee, Environment and Climate Change Committee, State-owned enterprises reviewing Committee and Human Rights and Gender Committee.

While the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured a supermajority in the parliament, it is widely believed it will gain a significant control over all the committees.

The Secretariat of the Parliament has revealed 11-members will be appointed for each committee, except for national security committee.
