Significant progress made to develop agriculture sector with Indian assistance

Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has revealed significant progress have been made to develop the agriculture sector of Maldives as per the agreement with the Government of India. An agreement was signed in New Delhi during the maiden state visit of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to India last December.

Since then discussions have been held with Indian authorities, with a meeting help last April in Maldives between stakeholders, Hussain Faisal, Assistant Director at Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture told a programme aired on PSM News. Faisal said as part of the discussions, Indian experts identified areas for assistance and completed a survey on the agriculture sector of the country.

The ministry has been working to advance the agriculture sector of Maldives and has recently revealed plans to establish a company to enhance the sector. In this regard, Maldives Agriculture Corporation will be established in association with Ministry of Economic Development and currently finalising the paperwork are underway, according to fisheries ministry.
