Parliament open for public suggestions to amend the parliamentary regulations

Parliament of Maldives has opened for suggestions from the public as part of the efforts to amend the parliamentary regulations.

The newly sworn-in parliament has decided to amend the parliamentary regulations within a period of a month has compiled an 11-member parliamentary committee to oversee the task. The 11-member committee consists of Parliamentarians Adam Shareef, Abdulla Riyaz, Ahmed Amir, Saud Hussain, Hassan Latheef, Rozaina Adam, Ilyas Labeeb, Ibrahim Shareef, Moosa Siraj, Ahmed Shiyam and Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

The Secretariat of Parliament has said suggestions can be made until June 10 and urged political parties and non-governmental organisations to submit suggestions. The secretariat further said suggestions can be made via written documents or mail.

The 11-member parliamentary committee has already made immediate changes to the parliamentary regulations including increasing the debating duration given to parliamentarians to 4 hours. While the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured a supermajority in the parliament, the parliamentarians from other parties will be provided with a very small duration if the previous regulation was followed. The newly elected Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has therefore revealed plans to provide duration for members in uniformity.
