Ministry of Home Affairs has appealed to cooperate with the efforts initiated by the government to improve the situation of prisons across Maldives.
In a statement issued in the wake of comments circulated by some individuals coinciding with the Prisons Audit Report 2019, the home ministry said the government is working to improve the situation of prisons to abide by the laws and regulations as well as the international frameworks participated by Maldives. The home ministry stated the Commission of Prison Audit established by the president has the technical capability to conduct the mandated tasks, adding the audit report published also details the situation and the improvements needed.
Noting the home ministry accepts the report, the statement mentioned improvements will be made in accordance with the audit report. In this regard, the home ministry appealed to cooperate with the efforts and initiations for the betterment of the whole society.
Conducting an audit on Maldivian prisons and detention facilities is a pledge included in the first 100-day goals of the government.
