Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has kicked off the project to establish a water system in Dharavandhoo in Baa Atoll. The project financed by Green Climate Fund costs over USD 1.8 million. The project was contracted to Canadian Crystalline Water India Limited in November last year.
Addressing the ceremony, Environment Minister Hussain Rasheed said since water systems in many islands are unsafe, it is an aim of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to establish safe water systems in all islands. Noting Dharavandhoo consists of an airport, the minister said a water system is needed by the residents as local tourism is deemed to boost in the island in the coming days. He expressed hope the system will be established and operated within a year.
Under the project, a water collection tank, storage tank and an RO plant unit will be installed in the island.
