Maldives concerned over comments by Sri Lankan Army Commander

The Government of Maldives has raised concerns over the comments made by the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army.

In an interview to an Indian media, Commander of the Sri Lankan Army Mahesh Senanayake said the second highest number of IS fighters in the region are from Maldives.

Communications Director of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Miuvan Mohamed said the government is deeply concerned over the statement by the Sri Lankan army chief, adding discussions have been held with the Government of Sri Lankan on the possible effect the comment of the army chief may cause on Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka. He noted the government has urged to take measures to ensure protection for Maldivians in Sri Lanka.

The communications director said the comments of army chief may ignite hatred towards Maldivians, while no authorities have officially declared any involvement of Maldivians in the attacks in Sri Lanka on April 21. He revealed the Maldivian Government has requested the Sri Lankan Government to issue an official statement which depicts the reality.
