Supreme Court has legal authority reform judiciary: DJA

Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) has revealed the Supreme Court of Maldives has the legal authority to initiate and work towards reforming the judiciary. While DJA made the statement, with the initiation of Supreme Court, a roadmap on judicial reform has been launched.

In a press conference, Chancellor of Judicial Academy Ahmed Majid said as stipulated in the constitution, the Supreme Court is the final authority and the highest authority for the administration of justice in Maldives. On the same context, Ahmed Majid revealed therefore, all authoritative powers are bestowed upon Supreme Court if required to reform the judiciary. Supreme Court is entrusted with formulating policies in administering justice in accordance with the constitution and laws, he said.

Furthermore, highlighting on the roadmap, Majid expressed it was compiled with the assistance and contribution from all relevant authorities. He expressed hope to receive the full support from the parliament in reforming the judiciary.

During the press conference, Judicial Administrator Dr. Abdulla Nazeer said although the three powers are separated in the construction, the roadmap outlines how the three powers can work collectively to ensure judicial freedom. He added what can be immediately achieved has been identified and work have begun to complete the tasks to reform the judiciary.
