Local Government Authority (LGA) has said the councils are more active now since the powers and authorities are reinstated.
Speaking to PSM News, Director of the parental authority of the council Mohamed Naseer stated the managing councils has been easier and more enhanced than before. Noting all authorities have not been reinstated, Mohamed Naseer revealed the authorities are being granted to councils by the government slowly. He added the councils can be fully functioned when all authorities required are granted highlighting the decentralization system is not functioning well as councils are powerless.
Furthermore, Naseer revealed many staff under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development fall under Male’ City Council adding such staff must be shifted under the council.
In the past five years, the previous government narrowed down the authorities of the councils and took them over to state ministries. However, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is working to provide councils with authorities they require to enhance the accountability of councils.
