Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has held discussions with Maldives Police Service regarding the case of the missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla.
HRCM said it is stressing the authorities to speed up the investigation, assuring the process is closely monitored. Further, HRCM revealed it is regularly seeking written updates and discussing the case with police in meetings as well. Noting it is attending the court hearings, HRCM said discussions were held with Prosecutor General's Office regarding the matter. In February, HRCM revealed 45 cases regarding murders and enforced disappearances have been investigated.
In a statement, HRCM revealed it has investigated cases of deaths that has taken place under the watch of the state, murders and questionable disappearances that had occurred between January 1, 2012 and November 17, 2018. HRCM elaborated it has investigated 16 cases that were submitted and 37 cases currently investigated by Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.
HRCM revealed relevant authorities have been advised on how to proceed with one case while notable points have been passed for the authorities in relation to 8 other cases. HRCM said it will monitor the implementation process of the recommendations provided to the authorities.
