President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has condemned and described the multiple explosions in Colombo, Sri Lanka as a cowardly act.
In a message of sympathy to President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka, President Solih said the government and people of Maldives express a deep sense of sadness and shock upon learning of the explosions.
“We grieve for those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to those have been injured as a result of this cowardly act. Many Maldivians call Sri Lanka their second home. We not only mourn with our Sri Lankan cousins, but share their hurt and stand in firm solidarity with them,’’ the president said.
In his message, the president said the explosions were clearly deliberate and coordinated acts of malice, targeting peaceful worshippers on what should have been a day of joy and festivities, involving celebrations with friends, family and other members of their religious community.
On conclusion, President Solih said Maldives add its voice to that of the region and of the world at large condemning these acts of terror. He assured Maldives stand ready to do all that we can to assist Sri Lanka in its hour of grief.
