Imports decrease, but exports significantly increase in March 2019

Maldives Customs Service has revealed although imports have decreased in March 2019, there was a significant increase in exports.

Maldives exported goods worth over USD 22 million, which is an increase of 39 percent compared to the same month of last year, according to statistics published from customs service. In this regard, goods worth USD 16 million were exported in March 2018. Customs said Maldives mainly exported goods to Thailand, Germany, France, UK and US.

Although Maldives mainly depends on imported goods, the value of imports dropped in March 2019 by 9 percent compared to the same month of last year. In this regard, goods worth USD 266 million were imported to Maldives last month, while the amount stood at USD 292 million in March 2018.

Customs said Maldives received over USD 17.3 million as import duty, which is a 4 percent drop from the USD 18 million received in March 2018.
