ECM decides to recount the vote of one constituency

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has decided to recount the vote of one constituency.

Speaking at a press held before announcing the interim results of the parliamentary election, President of the ECM, Ahmed Shareef announced the decision to recount the votes of a constituency which was contested by many.

The recount is being done on Maavashu constituency, according to information received. Maavashu constituency was competed by former Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed fielded by opposition coalition and Ibrahim Falah fielded by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The difference between both candidates is 13.

During the press, Ahmed Shareef noted the commission received 15 complaints which includes complaints on re-registration process, complaints on behavior of some people in polling stations and complaints of bribery. However, Ahmed Shareef expressed the amount of requests for recounting decreased as the difference of vote count between candidates were comparably large.

While the interim results of the parliamentary election held on April 6 have been announced, MDP secured super majority of the parliament, a first timer in the parliamentary life of the country. MDP have so far secured 65 constituencies.
