Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured a majority from all the cities in the parliamentary election.
MDP secured majority of the seats from Male’ City, Addu City and Fuvahmulah City, according to the preliminary results. In this regard, MDP secured 14 out of 15 seats in Male’, having only lost Villimale’ constituency.
Villimale’ was represented by member of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, while independent candidate Ahmed Usham won the seat. The former deputy attorney general won the seat after competing against the former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.
Moreover, MDP secured all 7 seats from Addu and all 3 seats from Fuvahmulah. Therefore, MDP has become the first political party to secure majority from all three cities. MDP is also the first party to secure a super majority in the parliament.
Initial results show MDP has won 67 out of the 87 seats in parliament.
