Investigations conclude on several murder and enforced disappearances cases

Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances has revealed it has concluded investigations on several cases.

Speaking about the progress of the ongoing investigations, president of the commission Husnul Suood said several cases from the 25 cases under investigation have been concluded. However, he did not disclose any further details.

Moreover, Husnul Suood stated although some cases are concluded, investigation of some cases are being delayed as the commission is not granted legal authorities. The bill, submitted to the parliament by the government, seeking to grant legal powers to presidential commissions was removed from the agenda. He expressed the next step of the cases concluded have not yet been decided.

Late December last year, Husnul Suood revealed investigations are carried swifter than expected, highlighting the efforts of the commission can be concluded sooner than expected.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established the commission on the first day of his presidential term, in line with his electoral pledge to initiate the task on the first day of office. President Solih established the commission under the authority bestowed upon the president on Article 115 of the constitution aiming to investigate the cases that were not given a preferable amount of attention to fully investigate the murdered individuals and disappeared people from January 1, 2012 to November 17, 2018. The commission also made realising it is a responsibility of the government to disclose all information of such cases to ensure justice.
