Vice President vows to develop communities via empowerment of councils

Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated despite the fact that Baa Atoll generates the majority of revenue to the state, adequate development has not been directed to the islands in the atoll. The vice president made the statement while meeting residents of the atoll.

Vice President Faisal Naseem said despite Baa Atoll being the source of the majority of state revenue, some islands in the atoll have heavily damaged harbours and lack basic amenities such as clean water and sewerage systems. The vice president said it is through the empowerment of local councils the current administration seeks to address these failings. Redirecting tax collected from atolls to local councils to empower local governments is one of the policies prioritised by the administration.

The vice president asked the citizens to elect people with integrity to the parliament in the April 6 polls, to ensure such policies of the government are implemented. Sharing the vision of the government with the citizens of Baa Atoll, Vice President Naseem stressed the administration has achieved the goals it set out to achieved during the first 100 working days and the administration will ensure the provision of basic amenities to all citizens. Noting the pledges of the administration have been spread out to five years, he painted a picture of prosperity once all the pledges are realised.

Baa Atoll is home to the largest number of tourist resorts in the country.
