PG raises charges against 6 individuals over the death of Jian

The state have raised charges against six individuals at W Construction Company Private Limited over the death of a young girl who was hit by a cement bag from a construction site in December last year.

In this regard, Prosecutor General’s Office raised charges against Managing Director of W Construction Moosa Hassan, Senior Site Supervisor Adam Shafeeq, and four Indian nationals. Moosa Hassan and Adam Shafeeq are charged with negligence homicide over failure to take necessary precautions in taking cement bags with a lifting sling. The charge conveys a sentence of one year, seven months and six days in jail.

Meanwhile, the Indian national who operated the winch to lift the cement bag is charged with reckless homicide which serves a jail sentence of 6 years. The remaining three nationals were charged with accomplice to reckless murder which requires to serve a sentence of three years, two months and 12 days.

The cement bag fell due to the winch line used in carrying the cement bag to the ninth floor loosening, according to the statement issued by Prosecutor General’s Office. Rawshan Jian succumbed to her injuries from being struck by the cement bag on December 17. W Construction was fined USD 32,375 over the death of the young girl.

Since then, the government has exerted major efforts to increase the safety of construction sites.
