Maldives urge to increase finance to establish renewable energy sources

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has called on developed countries to increase the finance to establish renewable energy sources. The Maldivian environment minister made the call at the 9th Session of the Assembly of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

In his intervention in the assembly, the environment minister urged the importance of mobilising finance to achieve the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets. Moreover, Minister Hussain Rasheed called upon the international community to make more funds available for the renewable energy investments, highlighting the importance of implementing the Paris Agreement. Noting small islands are most affected by climate change, he appealed to work towards achieving the Paris Agreement.

Meanwhile, on the side-lines of the 9th session of assembly of IRENA held in Abu Dhabi from January 11-13, Minister Hussain Rasheed met with several high level dignitaries and discussed collaborations. In this regard, the minister met the Director General of International Solar Alliance (ISA) Upendra Tripath.

Furthermore, at the margin of the 9th Session of the Assembly of IRENA, the environment minister met officials from Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). During the meeting, the delegation from Maldives briefed the status of ongoing projects funded under IRENA-ADFD project facility.

In addition, the environment minister met Senior Energy Policy Specialist from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) David Morgado and discussed the possibilities of funding waste management and renewable energy projects in Maldives.
