Tourism Ministry halts leasing islands, lagoons without bid

Ministry of Tourism temporarily has halted leasing islands, lands and lagoons without a bid process.

The tourism ministry stated the first and second points under Article 5 subsection (a) of the 8th Amendment to the Maldives Tourism Act have been suspended. However, the ministry did not reveal the reason for the suspension of the aforementioned points.

The 8th Amendment to Maldives Tourism Act was ratified by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in 2016 which was widely opposed and criticised. Back then, the opposition said the amendment paves way for corruption.

It is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to retrieve lands, islands and lagoons leased without a proper bidding.
